An Update from the President on the BP Oil Spill

BarackObamadotcom  2010年06月21日 — President Obama recorded a message for OFA supporters to update us on the disaster in the Gulf and how we move forward from here.

0:00
Hello everybody.
0:02
Today I wanted to speak directly to Organizing for America supporters about one of the most
0:06
important challenges facing us as a nation.
0:09
The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico
0:12
is the worst environmental disaster in American history.
0:16
And because there has never been a leak of this size at this depth
0:20
stopping it has tested the limits of human technology.
0:23
But make no mistake
0:25
we will do whatever’s necessary to stop the leak
0:27
clean up the spill
0:29
and help the people of the Gulf Coast recover.
0:31
Right now, thousands of ships and personnel are working across four states
0:35
to contain and clean up the oil.
0:38
And we've directed BP to mobilize
0:40
additional equipment and technology to capture up to 90 percent of the oil leaking out
0:44
of the well until a permanent relief well is finished.
0:48
We’re also focused on the restoration and recovery of the Gulf Coast itself.
0:52
That’s why, at our direction
0:54
BP has agreed to set aside an initial fund of $20 billion
0:59
administered by a third-party
1:00
to pay workers and small businesses for their losses
1:03
and help make the Gulf Coast whole.
1:06
To make certain a spill like this never happens again,
1:09
we’re working to understand what caused this disaster.
1:12
And we’re going to put an end to the corruption
1:14
and lack of oversight that has plagued the agency responsible for regulating the oil industry.
1:20
But if we’re honest with ourselves,
1:22
we must also recognize that the days of cheap and easily accessible oil are numbered
1:27
and the costs and risks associated with our addiction to fossil fuels aren’t going away.
1:33
The tragedy unfolding on our coast is the most painful and powerful reminder yet
1:37
that the time to embrace a clean-energy future is now.
1:41
That’s why, in the coming days,
1:43
I will work with both parties to find the necessary votes
1:46
to move comprehensive energy and climate legislation forward.
1:50
But we also know that real change is only possible
1:53
when ordinary Americans are willing to organize from the bottom up.
1:56
The pundits may say that this is too difficult –
1:58
that the special interests are too powerful
2:01
or that the political will just isn’t there.
2:04
But you’ve never settled for what people in Washington believe is possible.
2:07
If we refuse to heed the warnings of this disaster, we will have missed our best chance
2:11
to help build the clean-energy future American needs.
2:15
But if we seize this moment,
2:17
we can rebuild our economy on a new foundation
2:19
and make it more competitive in the 21st century,
2:22
creating entire new industries and millions of new clean energy jobs all across the country.
2:28
That’s why I’m asking you to stand with me today
2:31
add your name
2:32
and show your support for a clean-energy future.
2:35
Together, we can make it happen.

      • Obama is NO.1 at the respectable man in the world now.

        • Let's do what ever it takes to wean ourselves off of fossil fuel NOW! Not 20 years from now.

        • Good luck Mr. President.

        • British Oil $20 billion fund for 10,000 days(almost 25 years) damage to environment and livelihoods loss to USA affected by spill=$2 mil. a day for timeline for minimum 20 million americans = 10 cents a day for each person and their families. Wow a whole dime to live on.

@JoeTCaps Pretty cool that you live in a country where you can actually mouth off that way to the Commander-In-Chief, huh?
      "Country First," right Joe T?

    • Dear Mr. President,
I am a longtime and ardent supporter of your work. You are the right person at the right time and our Nation is fortunate.
That said, I'm also a PR guy. And I'm continuously shocked and frustrated at your Communications Department's inability to craft messages that resonate with many American citizens.
Short, tight and concise. Easy words. Give them a takeaway.
A little hard-edged Nationalism wouldn't hurt either. And not just on 7/4.
      Respectfully and In Service-

    • Those poor animals are dying because of this oil spill this needs to be fixed fast before we loose a majority of the wildlife on the gulf coast.

    • @Ilamarea Right, he will be over to change your diaper, entitlement baby!

    • Additional supply depots required.

    • @JoeTCaps Who else can do a better job? And don't say we should follow ourselves!! Because when it comes to the stuff going on in this world today I STRUGGLE TO THINK OF SOMEONE ELSE THAT COULD DO A BETTER JOB!!

    • @supermike2164
Your fucking retarded. Get out. also, god is a lie.

    • @dethdakiller0 IT HAS TO BE SAFE!!! WE CAN"T AFFORD ANY MORE MISTAKES WITH OUR PLANET!! AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS OIL THING IS HURTING US REAL BAD WORSE THAN WE EVEN REALIZE!!!
